Tamil Nadu govt to propose hanging for sexual offenders

The BJP leader insisted that all the officials who have been careless in this issue should also be punished.

Chennai: The State government on Monday said it would initiate steps to ensure capital punishment for sexual offenders. The state fisheries minister D. Jayakumar said the government would initiate steps for enforcing death by hanging to rapists. The Minister was responding to a question on the death of a plus two girl from Dharmapuri in the State who died after allegedly being raped. Echoing the same view, BJP State president Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan said the punishment awarded for those involved in sexual offences should be made harsher so as to ensure such cruel crimes don’t recur.

“The sexual offenders should not be allowed to go scot-free. The Dharmapuri incident has raised several crucial issues. For instance, the most worrisome thing is has the medical treatment been delayed to her? Were the crimes committed against her detected quickly?" she asked.

The BJP leader insisted that all the officials who have been careless in this issue should also be punished. She also alleged that some officials were attempting to shield the accused and demanded that all offenders be punished immediately.

Meanwhile, VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan who called on Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami, demanded that the government provide a house to the affected family besides financial aid.
