Chain snatching cases rampant in Vizag city

All the crimes were reportedly committed by 2 youngsters.

VISAKHAPATNAM: One more series of chain snatching case was reported from the city on Friday, adding to the cases that were reported since two months and being investigated by the city police.

On Friday, women were targeted by motorbike-borne miscreants at five places within 7 km radius in the city. The snatching cases took place between 8.45 am and 9.45 am and all the crimes were reportedly committed by two youngsters, under Airport, Gopalapatnam and Pendurthi police stations limits in the city.

In one of these incidents, A. Padmavathi alias Manga of Susarla Colony, coming under Airport police station limits, was robbed of her 80 gm gold chain as two miscreants on a Bajaj Pulsar bike followed her and snatched her ornaments from her neck. The incident took place while Padmavathi was on her way to a temple. The rider of the bike was wearing a helmet and the pillion rider had covered his face, with a cloth, to hide their identity.

In another incident, a 60-gram gold chain was snatched from one K. Lalitha Kumar reportedly by the same gang at Baji Junction area under Airport police station limits. Another woman was robbed of her 36-gram gold chain at Prahladhapuram area under Gopalapatnam police station limits.

ADCP (Crimes) V. Suresh Babu said that two more chain snatchings were reported at Chinamushiriwada and Sujathanagar areas coming under Pendurthi police station limits in the city. The gang robbed over 240 grams gold ornaments in the five incidents. “We have procured the CCTV footage of the two accused escaping from the spots after committing the crime. We are suspecting that some local gang might have committed the offence as they have much idea about the service roads and other alternative roads to escape from the spots,” he added.

Vizag city had witnessed four chain snatching cases on July 19 this year from 8 am to 8.45 am. The police are still groping in the dark with no concrete lead to solve the cases.
