Chennai: Directive to 13 collectors on water body encroachments

The bench also dispensed with the further personal appearance of the collectors.

Chennai: Madras high court has asked district collectors to give preference to removal of encroachments on water bodies seriously, apart from their routine work.

A division bench comprising Justices Huluvadi G.Ramesh and RMT. Teeka Raman made the observations orally when 13 district collectors appeared before them as per the earlier directive of the court. The bench also dispensed with the further personal appearance of the collectors.

The bench posted to November 17, further hearing of the petitions, which sought to remove the encroachments on water bodies. The bench had on September 21 ordered the appearance of the 13 district collectors as they failed to file the status report.

During the hearing, the bench orally advised the collector to approach the court in case if they face any difficulty in implementing the orders of this court. Without obtaining the no objection certificate from the district revenue officers, the registering authorities should not register any documents relating to government lands, the bench added.
