Hyderabad: Lots of water, not at homes

Quthbullapur is linked to Godavari project, doesn't have drinking water.

Hyderabad: The Quthbullapur division needs 402 km of water pipeline network and six reservoirs for the entire Assembly constituency that generates over Rs 100 crore for the GHMC in terms of property tax, registrations and trade licences.

The residents of one of the biggest Assembly segments in the city receive water once in five days though there is no scarcity. The state government needs to pump in Rs 220 crore to ensure regular water supply in the constituency which has a mix of residential, commercial and industrial establishments. During elections, regular water supply was on top of the agenda; two years later, the promise is still incomplete.

Water supplied to Quthbullapur is from the Godavari at present. Mr S. Devender Reddy, a local resident, said, “Water supply has been very less for several months. We get water once every three-four days and that too at very low pressure for only half-an-hour. The problem is getting worse by the day. When I contacted the Water Board divisional office, the authorities said there was no dearth of water as there were supplies from all phases of the Krishna project and phase one of Godavari. But the issue is with storage tanks and standardised pipelines.”

The Water Board draws 28 million gallons of water from the Godavari scheme, 18 MGD for Quthbullapur, six for the Kukatpally Housing Board and 4 MGD for Alwal.

Due to the water situation, the market value of properties has seen a sharp decline especially in areas like Boduppal, Uppal, Quthbullapur, Nizampet, Pragatinagar, Miyapur, locals said.

There are few takers for flats at the realty hot spots of Nizampet and Pragatinagar. Many who own houses and apartments here feel that the cost of living is high as every family has to spend at least Rs 4,000 per month on water. There is severe water scarcity at Vishwa-karma Colony, Suraram village, Quthbullapur constituency.
