Vizag has the distinction of having the first hospital to perform triple transplants.

Visakhapatnam: Marking 'Organ Donation Day' on Sunday, a health walk coupled with 'Gift a Life' campaign at R.K. beach will be organised by Apollo Hospitals. Visakhapatnam has achieved unique distinction of having the first hospital to perform triple transplants in Andhra Pradesh, said Apollo Hospitals Regional CEO Dr Sandeep Chatrath. "Organ Donation is a must for the greater collective good. One can save up to 8 lives. 1.75 Indians suffer from end stage renal disease and they require a transplant, however, only 3000 get an organ. 50,000 Indians require a heart transplant only 15 heart transplants are done every year in India while 50,000 Indians require a liver transplant, but only 400 liver transplants are done every year. Only if individuals come together for a common good can the world change, organ donation needs this collective pursuit more than ever," said Dr Sandeep Chatrath.

"Apollo Hospitals is working closely with Jeevandan in spreading awareness about "organ donation as a gift of life. Jeevandan organisation is doing remarkable work in spreading awareness about organ donation in Andhra Pradesh," said Dr Sandeep.
