No clarity yet on fate of tribal universities in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh

To establish these universities in TS and AP, the Centre has to amend the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University Act.

Hyderabad: Despite allocation of funds in the Union Budget, the future of establishing a Central University in AP and tribal universities in both AP and TS is uncertain. To establish these universities in TS and AP, the Centre has to amend the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University Act.

For setting up of the Central University in AP, the Centre has to amend the Central University Act. And yet without the amendments, the Centre has allotted the funds—Rs 10 cr for each university.

Unfortunately, even the state government will be able to go ahead with the formation of the universities without the amendment of the Acts.

To amend the Central University Act and the Tribal University Act, the concerned ministries in the Central government have to prepare draft Bills which the Union Cabinet has to approve. After that the Central government has to introduce the Bills. The amendments involve the inclusion of the states of AP and Telangana in each of the Acts.

Both state governments have identified the lands to set up these universities. AP has decided to set up the Central University in Anantapur district and has allotted 491.23 acres land for the purpose. It has also decided to set up a tribal university in Vizianagaram district and has allotted 526.24 acres of land.

Meanwhile, the TS government has decided to set up the tribal university in Warangal district and it has identified 487 acres of land for the purpose.
