Kozhikode college refuses entry to married student

Neeraja K, had eloped with her boyfriend and cameraman Muhammed Ramees. They claimed to have registered their marriage on Feb 6.

Kozhikode: A first year degree student of a private women’s college in Nadakkavu alleged on Friday that she was denied entry to her classes, for marrying outside her religion and without the blessings of her parents. But college authorities insisted that the student was only asked to bring her guardian after being absent from classes for more than 10 days.

Neeraja K, had eloped with her boyfriend and cameraman Muhammed Ramees on February 1. They claimed to have registered their marriage on February 6. Her last attendance at the college was on January 29. When she approached the college on February 11, she says, the vice-principal did not let her meet the principal and explain her position.

‘“I was told that they cannot let students who marry outside their religion and without the blessings of their parents to continue studies there,” said Neeraja.

Meanwhile, the principal said that Neeraja was asked to bring her parents or guardian to admit her to classes following her long absence. “We asked her to bring their marriage certificate and asked her to wait for a week . They had agreed to it and now are unnecessarily creating a controversy,” said the principal.
