Bengaluru: Special Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, Rupak Kumar Dutta is likely to be the next police chief of Karnataka. Dutta belongs to the 1981 batch of Indian Police Service (IPS) and is the senior most IPS officer in the State.
Prior to his current assignment he was special director, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and was posted to the MHA on December 1, 2016.
The incumbent DG&IGP Om Prakassh will demit office on January 31 on superannuation. According to sources the Chief Minister may go by seniority and appoint the senior most IPS officer as the next Director General and Inspector General of Police (DG&IGP).
"Dutta is the senior most IPS officer with enough experience in the State and Centre. He has an impeccable track record as well," said an official source.
There are five contenders for the post of police chief including Dutta. The list includes DGP, Internal Security Division (ISD), Neelmani Raju of 1983 IPS batch, followed by three batchmates; DGP, Criminal Investigation Department (CID) H.C. Kishore Chandra, DGP & Commandant, Home guards M.N. Reddi and DGP, Training, P.S Meena.
The selection committee to choose the candidate for the police chief's post is yet to meet. The committee is headed by the Home Minister and comprises Law Minister and Chief Secretary.
