Telangana assembly to see fewer women this time

The Congress had fielded 11 women and the TRS four but only three from each party won.

Hyderabad: Six women candidates have won the Assembly elections from a total of 30 candidates fielded by the political parties in the state. While there 119 seats in the state Assembly, women’s representation is just 5 per cent.

Though women have requested for the 33 per cent reservation, their representation has further come down.

In 2014, there were 27 women in the fray while nine got elected.

This time, all the 14 women candidates of the BJP lost.

The Congress had fielded 11 women and the TRS four but only three from each party won.

While P. Sabita Reddy (Maheshwaram), D. Anasuya (Mulug) and Banoth Hari Priya Naik (Yellandu) won from the Congress, Padma Devender Reddy (Medak), G. Sunitha Mahender Reddy (Alair) and Rekha Naik (Khanapur) won from the TRS.

While TD’s N. Suhasini lost in Kukatpally, TJS’ Bhavani Reddy from Siddipet lost against TRS’ T. Harish Rao.

The margin of votes with which the women lost ranged from 15,000 votes to 171 votes which was seen in the case of Kovval Laxmi from Asifabad of the TRS.
