Chennai: Three teenagers including two friends drowned in the sea off Marina beach in separate incidents on Sunday. Police said that two families from Kovilambakkam had visited Marina beach on the weekend as a family outing.

The drowned boys were identified as Dhanush (14), a class 9 student, and Akash (13), a class 7 student, at a private school in their neighbourhood.

After visiting the memorials of former chief ministers MGR and J. Jayalalithaa there, the families were spending time by the shore.

The two boys were playing in the water when a giant wave engulfed them. Police said that family members alerted local fishermen and attempted to look for the boys in vain. A few hours later, Akash’s body washed ashore, police said adding that Dhanush was nowhere to be found. Police have alerted the police stations along the coast. In another incident, Sakthivel (17), a first year college student drowned in the sea. A native of Kaapur village near Kalasapakkam in Tiruvannamalai, Sakthivel was studying in a city college and was staying in Velachery.

On Sunday, his friend Srinivasan came to visit him from Tiruvannamalai and the duo went for a dip in the sea when Sakthivel drowned, police said.
