New treatments give hope to infertile couples

In India nearly 10-15% of married couples suffer from inability to conceive naturally, due to various male or female infertility factors.

BENGALURU: The issue of infertility among married couples is on the rise due to various factors, including social ones such as late marriages and delay in conceiving, and so is the use of latest treatment techniques like Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) to help them conceive. In India nearly 10-15% of married couples suffer from inability to conceive naturally, due to various male or female infertility factors.

In order to increase the fertility rate, ART, Pre-implantation genetic screening (PGS), including time lapse technology, are being incorporated in many hospitals across the city. “The new technological advancement in IVF has the potential to boost the chances of delivering a healthy baby. As the technology allows potential screening of embryos for a risk of abnormal chromosomes, doctors can increase chances of successful IVF procedure,” said Dr Santosh Gaur, IVF expert, Indira IVF Hospital.

IVF (in-vitro fertilisation) is the most commonly used ART technique. Determining the cause of IVF failure or understanding the possible causes of failure like age, quality of eggs or sperm, the health of uterus, etc. helps plan the treatment to tackle the problem effectively and also increase the chances of success.
Dr Mahesh Koregol, Fertility Consultant at Nova IVI Fertility said, “IVF is recommended for male factor infertility, which includes decreased sperm count or sperm motility and female factors such as ovulation disorders, blocked or damaged fallopian tubes or even removed fallopian tubes, premature ovarian failure, uterine fibroids, unexplained infertility, etc.”

He said the treatment modalities are not the same for two patients. Some infertile couples may achieve pregnancy with simpler treatments such as medication or IUI (intrauterine insemination), while other may require multiple cycles of IVF or ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection). Also, there has been a rise in the delay in conceiving by couples leading to more infertility, city doctors said. According to reports, 27 to 30 million couples in India are infertile who are seeking children and about 15% are believed to have purely age-related causes. Experts said more people are now opting for these advanced techniques to overcome infertility and also the success rates are high.
