No minority tag for Aligarh Muslim University, says Centre

It sought permission to withdraw its appeal against a Allahabad HC verdict holding that AMU cannot be treated as a minority institution.

New Delhi: The NDA government has filed a fresh affidavit in the Supreme Court stating that the Aligarh Muslim University, a Central University cannot be granted minority status and sought permission to withdraw its appeal against a Allahabad High Court verdict holding that AMU cannot be treated as a minority institution.

A three-judge Bench of Justices J.S. Khehar, V. Gopala Gowda and L. Nageswara Rao before whom the matter came up for hearing on Monday granted four weeks time to the Aligarh Muslim University to file its response after senior counsel P.P. Rao pleaded for the same.
