Chennai sees glut in mango arrivals

The mangoes that have arrived here are mostly bought from Andhra Pradesh and Salem.

Chennai: The Chennai market has seen a glut in the arrival of mangoes - the king of fruits - this summer, and more affordable too as it is priced lesser than what it was a year ago.

As the increasing heat wave condition makes one crave for mouthwatering fruits that melt in the mouth, the mango appears to emerge as the ideal fruit this season.

The mangoes that have arrived here are mostly bought from Andhra Pradesh and Salem.

The two varieties that have flooded this season are: Banganapalli and Javadhu.

The mangoes had arrived late this time to the market but their rates are lesser than in the previous year.

The Bangnapalli is priced Rs 125 per kilo while the Javadhu is priced Rs 90 per kilo in the local market. The fall in prices had led to the rise in sales of mangoes in the local markets. The sales as of now in local market had reached up to 500 kg.

When asked, Murugesan a local vendor in Triplicane market, said, “Mangoes are always the best fruit and it’s sales is also more compared to last year.”

As the mangoes have come late this year, the craze for the fruit is more, he said and added the sales for mango is more
profitable.
