Afzal Guru event row: Press Club of India says organisers misled them

The hall was booked by a senior member and we had no advance notice of what was going to happen, says Press Club.

New Delhi: The Press Club of India on Friday distanced itself from an event in their premises in which anti-India slogans were raised during a commemorative meeting held to mourn the hanging of 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.

Press Club chairman Rahul Jalali said that they were not aware about this event, adding that they were 'mislead'.

"Press Club has nothing to do with it. We give our halls on hire. This hall was booked by a senior member and we had no advance notice of what was going to happen. This hall was booked for a conference and every day half a dozen conferences take place here," Jalali told ANI.

"Nowhere was it mentioned that this is a conference regarding Afzal Guru. If that had been mentioned, we would not have allowed it. We were misled. The moment we heard this we stopped the event and asked the people to leave," he added.

Earlier, Press Club filed an FIR at the Parliament Street Police Station against the organisers of the event where slogans were raised in favour of Guru.

Days after the outrage over a group of left-leaning students in Jawaharlal Nehru University organising a meet to mourn the hanging of Guru, another commemorative meeting was held at the Press Club of India in Delhi on Wednesday where anti-India slogans were raised.

The Press Club management had on Thursday issued a showcause notice to the members, who had booked the conference hall for the event.
