Hyderabad: Leaking gas triggers blast at office of oil seed firm

The traditional method of disposal of the dead is to expose the body atop tall towers where they used to be eaten by vultures.

Hyderabad: A blast at an oilseed firm’s office caused panic among the residents of Saroornagar on Wednesday afternoon. A security guard was injured and furniture was damaged in the sudden high-intense blast. Though initially the police suspected that explosives triggered the blast and subsequent fire, a forensic check revealed that the blast was caused by a leaking gas cylinder.

LB Nagar DCP Tafseer Iqubal said the leaked gas formed methane by interacting with oxygen and then came into contact with the thermostat of a fridge in the same room, and this led to the blast.

“The blast had a pushing effect and an enormous sound due to which windows and doors were damaged. A minor fire followed the blast,” said the DCP.

Police officials also checked the CCTV footages available in the building, which indicated that no explosives were kept in the room.

The security guard, who was in the adjacent room, suffered an injury as a broken door hit him. No other person was present on the premises when the blast took place.

Due to the huge sound of the blast, many people in the neighbourhood ran out of their houses and shops.

Cops were baffled to see the blast scene with massive damage and could not figure out what caused it. Later, forensic experts, who were called in, examined the spot and found the leaked gas cylinder and the fridge kept in the same room.

“We are investigating the case after booking a case. We will check if there is any other reason for the blast,” said the DCP.
