Hyderabad: Minor girls seek divorce

The only proof of their marriage is information from villagers and complaints of the girls.

Hyderabad: Two under-age girls have approached the Child Rights Commission claiming that they don’t want to stay with their husbands after being forcibly married off.

A sixteen-year-old girl from Hayathnagar mandal said that her parents had forcibly married her off to one 35-year-old Srikanth Goud in February 2016. The girl said she wanted a divorce as Goud was beating her every day. She said she wanted to continue her education. The second victim, a 14-year-old, was married off to 40-year-old P. Raju. Both the girls approached the rights body with help from locals who helped them out of their abusive marriages.

Anuradha Rao, president of Balala Hakkula Sangham said: “The only proof of their marriage is information from villagers and complaints of the girls. Child marriages must be stopped immediately and the government must ensure heightened vigilance in rural areas.”
