Thiruvananthapuram: Assembly disrupted for sixth consecutive day

The speaker said Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala himself had promised to cooperate to conduct the House smoothly.

Thiruvananthapuram: The Assembly proceedings were disrupted for the sixth consecutive day on Monday on the Sabarimala issue. Speaker P. Sreeramakrishnan adjourned the House when the Opposition created a bedlam protesting against the extension of prohibitory orders at Sabarimala.

The proceedings lasted for over 30 minutes unlike the previous days when the House sat only for about 20 minutes.

From the moment the speaker entered the floor of the Assembly, the Opposition started shouting slogans carrying the same old banner demanding the lifting of prohibitory orders at Sabarimala and trooped to the well of the House.

The speaker said Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala himself had promised to cooperate to conduct the House smoothly.

"It is during question hour that people's issues are taken up. There is a certain norm to raise issues inside the Assembly. The Opposition Leader is free to raise any issues during zero hour," said the speaker.

The Opposition MLAs gathered in front of his podium shouting slogans, but the question hour continued when issues relating to coastal and hill highways were taken up. But Congress youth MLAs Hibi Eden and Anwar Sadat and Muslim League's P. K. Basheer attempted to climb the podium to provoke the speaker. Following this, he rushed through the remaining matter and adjourned the House.

The three Opposition MLAs, V. S. Sivakumar, Parakkal Abdulla and N. Jayaraj's, have continued their satyagraha before the Assembly entrance for the eighth consecutive day. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has not shown any sign of conceding their demand to lift the prohibitory orders at Sabarimala.

Meanwhile, the UDF has decided to intensify its protest in the coming days.
