Osmania General Hospital comes to the rescue as others lack equipment

The test in the private laboratories costs between Rs 800 and Rs 1,200.

Hyderabad: The serology test to detect dengue is available only at the Osmania General Hospital and patients reporting to Gandhi Hospital and other area hospitals have to pay to get the test done at private diagnostic centres.

The test in the private laboratories costs between Rs 800 and Rs 1,200.

Every day, between five and 10 patients each from Nampally, Barkas, Malakpet, Golconda area hospitals are referred to private laboratories for testing to confirm dengue fever.

A senior government doctor said the laboratories at these hospitals had the diagnostic equipment but were not supplied reagents in time.

Mr Mujtaba H. Askari, who works for patients at government hospitals, said, “The government has to strengthen its diagnostic facilities in area hospitals.” He said as these hospitals do not perform the tests, patients rush to Osmania General Hospital.

Dr C.K. Balaji, a general physician, said the maximum burden of dengue is on the secondary and tertiary care centres.
