Tamil Nadu: Dairy firm directors under scanner for Rs 1,137 cr fraud

EOW to take help of TN dailies to create awareness.

Chennai: Madras High Court has directed the Economic Offences Wing to take effective steps to obtain genuine certificate of immovable property of two directors of HBN Dairies and Allied Ltd, which cheated more than 20,000 depositors to the tune of Rs 1,137 crore, as well as identify, any further properties that may stand in the name of the accused.

Passing orders on a petition from Immanuel, Justice M.S. Ramesh also gave liberty to the petitioner to approach the EO wing with his complaint and on receipt of the same, the EO wing will have to take steps to recognize the petitioner as a depositor.

Concurring with the submission of Vijayalakshmi K.Rajaratnam, the judge said though the complaint was made on December 2, 2016, it was seen that apart from the paper publication in the month of December 2017, inviting complaints from depositors, no other form of advertisement was made to reach out to the depositors till date.

Government advocate P. Kritika Kamal submitted that as on date they have received 602 complaints out of provisionally identified 5,000 depositors approximately.

In these circumstances, it would be appropriate to direct the EO wing to give wide publicity in all the Tamil and English dailies circulated in the state of Tamil Nadu as well as through the Visual media and through any other media through which every section of the people in the state can be reached.

Apart from causing the publicity, the EO wing shall also co-ordinate with all the district collectors of the state as well as the Superintendents of Police to ascertain as to whether any complaints in connection with the present issue was pending with them, the judge added.
