Driving with cool head helps avoid mishaps: Experts

Another psychologist, Aliah, said the driver should assess his/her mental status while driving.

Chennai: If only he was driving with a right mind, two deaths along with the perpetrator’s perennial guilt would have been avoided, said B. Aliah, a city-based psychologist referring to the ECR mishap in which an speeding bank manager killed two persons.

Over speeding or lack of professional driving skill are the likely reasons for the mishap caused by the bank manager.

Managing trustee of Indian Road Safety and Welfare Trust, Dr Noel A. Kanagaraj blamed the poor road planning in the city. “Many vital roads including ECR lack in central median, which is a fundamental need. Many lapses like improper placement of signboards and poor licensing system add to mishaps,” he added.
“While evaluating drivers to pen a book called- guidelines to drivers, I was shocked to learn that around 60 per cen of Tamil Nadu’s drivers are oblivious of basic driving insights. Licensing system should be privatized like in Maharastra to decline the death number,” said Dr Kanagaraj said.

Sparing time for yoga and meditation could help in de-stressing, said yoga practitioner, Devika Sridhar. “Regular pranayama will take away the pessimism in people and is a stress buster,” she added.

“Traffic is stress while driving. Adding to that is time management to balance personal and professional commitments. But emotional balance and situation brilliance will help you in tackling situations. One should always sail according to the wind,” said psychologist S. Venkataramani adding that proper planning along with adequate cushion time will make one focus on driving.

Another psychologist, Aliah, said the driver should assess his/her mental status while driving. “Why not take a small driving break and come to peace over the problems. After all, safety is important,” she said. “If an individual spends ten minutes in comprehending the changes in them, they will fetch a solution too,” she added.
