Bengaluru: After an 18-hour long operation by fire and emergency department, the body of a 19-year-old youth was fished out from a 70-feet deep well in Jankiramanagar in Jayabharathnagar Layout under Banaswadi police limits early Wednesday. The fire and emergency services personnel had to use suction hose to empty the well to fish out the body, which had settled at the bottom.
Police have identified the deceased as Hanumantha, a construction labourer. He had ventured into the well to swim along with two others, identified as Jagadish and Anand. The incident took place around 12.20 pm.
According to the police, a group of five friends Jagadish, Anand, Hanook, Seth and Hanumantha are construction labourers. On Tuesday as their work got over early, they decided to go for swim in the 70-feet deep well. While Seth and Hanook remained outside Hanumatha along with Jagadish and Anand, ventured into the well for swim.
Hanumantha began to drown as he didn’t know swimming, and Jagadish and Anand tried to help him and raised an alarm. Subsequently an alert was made to the police and fire and emergency services.
“We received a call around 12.20 pm about the incident and soon one rescue unit was pressed into the service. The operation was started around 12.24 pm, but the rescue personnel failed to locate the body due to the muck and hyacinth settled in the water. Around late evening, they decided to empty the well as the body had settled at the bottom. A suction machine was pressed into service, but the operation was suspended around 1.30 am. It was resumed again on Wednesday morning and the body was finally traced around 8 am,” added the fire official.
A native of Kalburgi, Hanumatha is survived by three siblings and mother. A resident of Janakiramnagar, Hanumantha was staying with his mother. Banaswadi police have registered a case.
