Mysuru: Doc-cop proves worth in blood

Mysuru police chief has been donating the life-saving fluid for 25 years.

Mysuru: His every day job may involve fighting crime, but Mysuru top cop, Dr A Subramanyeswara Rao's training as a doctor comes to the fore every now and again, especially when it comes to promoting blood donation.

Aware that one unit of blood donated can save three lives and that India is short of three million units of blood with only one per cent of eligible donors bothering to chip in, he has been doing his bit by donating blood himself for over two decades.

"It was 25 years ago that I first donated blood. During the first 10 years I donated twice a year since that is the minimum gap one is supposed to have between donations, and thereafter once a year. So I have done it about 35 times," he said.

On Tuesday Dr Rao set the tone at the blood donation camp organised by the city police as part of Road Safety Week by once again donating blood and inspiring 32 others, including 25 policemen to do so as well. A product of the Bengaluru Medical College, he gave up a career in medicine to fight crime instead and hasn't looked back since.

"Although I haven't practiced medicine much as I took to civil service immediately after my internship, I do still practice to some extent in emergencies. And of course, the knowledge of medicine helps in criminal investigation," he explained.
