The desperation for small change made children in the house, kings.

Kurnool: Ashok woke up to a shocking morning when he was denied his quota of milk when he tendered a Rs 500 note.

Unaware of the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, Ashok turned to a nearby ATM to get Rs 100 note but found the ATMs closed, as were banks. His wife Latha suggested him that he break open the ‘kiddy bank’ his child was saving in. Coins and small denomination currency poured out of it.

Like Ashok, several families in Kurnool town experienced difficulty the morning after demonetisation. Some families said they found it extremely difficult to do small-time shopping with big currency.

Children with kiddy banks were most sought after to bail out their parents. The habit of saving inculcated among children has now come handy, said a parent.
Praveena, a housewife, said, “We keep small change to buy vegetables and flowers.”

The experience of Maddileti was different. An employee with a private engineering college,, he said that he faced problem at a tiffin centre where he went to get his breakfast. When he tendered a Rs 500 note, he was told that it is no longer legal tender. A shocked Maddileti picked up an altercation with the man. As he was not successful, he went home and broke open the ‘hundi’ kept in the puja room and used the money to survive the day, he said.
