Chennai: Abandoned newborn rescued from bus stand

The woman had said that it would be unhygienic to take the baby inside the washroom and requested Gajalakshmi to hold her.

Chennai: A new-born was abandoned at Sivakanchi bus stop in Kanchipuram district on Monday night.

According to the complainant, a nurse who works at the Kanchipuram government hospital identified as Gajalakshmi, 35, was waiting at the bus stop to board a bus back home after work at around 7 pm when a young woman, around 25 years old handed a baby over to her on the pretext of using the washroom.

The woman had said that it would be unhygienic to take the baby inside the washroom and requested Gajalakshmi to hold her.

The woman didn’t return even after an hour, Gajalakshmi said in her complaint.

Worried, she asked other women at the bus stop to go check if the mother had fainted or something else had happened in the washroom.

She even handed over the baby to another woman and went to check around the bus station, even requesting announcements to be made.

However, after nobody approached her to claim the baby, Gajalakshmi went to the Sivakanchi police station.

A case has been registered with the police who are keeping a lookout and combing through CCTV footages. Police said that if they do not find the mother within a week, the baby will be handed over to an orphanage.

The baby is now in Kanchipuram government hospital where the pediatric department, under Dr Arun Mirthra is ensuring his safety.
