Kochi: Baby crawls back to life

The couple and their child were part of a group of family members who were returning home after a pilgrimage to Palani Murugan temple.

Kochi: A 10-month old baby girl fell off a speeding vehicle near a forest check post in Idukki, braved the darkness, spotted the light and crawled up to its safety in a nerve-wracking incident that has stunned the world.

The unthinkable happened near Eravikulam national park on Munnar-Marayur road in Idukki district around 9.30 p.m. on Sunday when the baby fell off the lap of her mother who was sleeping.

The couple and their child were part of a group of family members who were returning home after a pilgrimage to Palani Murugan temple. The parents were identified as Satheesh and Sathyabhama, hailing from Mullarikudy in Udumbanchola taluk, Idukki.

The hired multi-utility vehicle travelled about 35 km when the mother realised the child was missing.

By then, the forest officials, who noticed the crawling and crying baby on the CCTV installed at the check post, had taken care of the injured and bleeding child and informed all nearby police stations.

The infant crashed to the road when the vehicle took a sharp curve near the Rajamala checkpost.
