Chennai: Actor Vijay on Wednesday issued a statement condemning the online abuse of a female journalist in Twitter by people claiming to be his fans.
Journalist Dhanya Rajendran, editor of an online news-aggregating site was harassed online and trolled after her remarks about a movie of the actor. The journalist filed a complaint with the city police on Tuesday.
“I am a person who respects women. Anyone has the right to criticise any movie. I am of the opinion that women should not be denigrated under any circumstances,” the actor said in a statement issued in Tamil.
He also requested to not make comments on social media that denigrate woman.
“Everyone should respect women and I request that no comments or statements be issued or posted on social media regarding women that would offend anyone.”
The cyber wing of city police had earlier registered an FIR on Dhanya’s complaint.
