Supreme Court refuses to relax life term for Sherin

The apex court has ruled that circumstance does not warrant a reexamination of the high court verdict.

Kochi: The Supreme Court on Monday has rejected a writ appeal filed by Sherin, the prime accused in the Bhaskara Karanavar murder case, challenging the Kerala High Court verdict convicting her for rigorous life imprisonment. The apex court has ruled that circumstance does not warrant a reexamination of the high court verdict.

Sherin, the daughter-in-law of Bhaskara Karanvar, along with three others were sentenced to rigorous life imprisonment by the Mavelikkara additional sessions court in 2010. The Sessions court verdict was later upheld by the high court. The other accused in the case are Basith Ali, Nidhin alias Unni and Shanu Rashid.

Bhaskara Karanavar 65, a native of Chengannur, was found murdered in his house on November 7, 2007. Karanavar, a widower, who returned to Kerala after having a long stint in the US, was living with his mentally challenged youngest son BInu and his wife Sherin and daughter Aishwarya. According to the prosecution Sherin and the three other accused hatched conspiracy to murder Karanavar with the intention of inheriting the financial assets of former. Sherin was also unhappy that Karanavar has removed her name from his will.
