Motorists pay the price for BBMP apathy

With more rains forecast, Palike will now fix potholes using wet mix-cement and gravel: Official

Bengaluru: Will the BBMP wake up only after potholes claim the lives of innocent citizens? With three fatalities in five days on Mysuru Road, the answer seems to be 'yes'.

On Sunday, 47-year-old Radha, a resident of Shyampura, who was riding pillion along with her nephew, died instantly after the rider lost balance while trying to avoid a pothole near Nayandahalli.

This accident comes just four days (October 3) after the tragic death of Sagai Mary and Antony Joseph who fell from their two-wheeler and got run over by a bus on Sirsi Circle flyover.

Newly-elected Mayor Sampath Raj, who should have visited Radha’s family and consoled them, was seen inaugurating an Indira Canteen at Domlur and getting felicitated by partymen. However, the Mayor was quick enough to announce a compensation of Rs 5 lakh.

The city residents are also unhappy with the insensitive way he had dealt with the family of Sirsi Circle flyover victims.

The Mayor had reportedly argued with the family whether the victims were wearing helmets at the time of accident. Later the CCTV footage revealed that that they were indeed wearing helmets.

With weathermen forecasting more rains for upcoming days, BBMP which was filling potholes using hot mix using gravel (jelly) and asphalt will now be opting to fix potholes using wet mix-cement and gravel, a top source from BBMP said.

Even though cold mix isn't much effective as hot mix, where asphalt and gravel is heated up to 150 degrees and poured and then rolled, we have no option as rains aren't receding, the source maintained.
