Woman threatens to commit suicide on Madras High Court campus

She informed the police that she attempted to take the extreme step as there was no progress in the matrimonial dispute.

Chennai: A 34-year-old woman of Kodungaiyur, who has been facing matrimonial dispute against her husband in a family court, attempted to commit suicide on the Madras high court campus on Wednesday. She threatened to jump from a building after a family court adjourned the matter.

The couple was living separately after a dispute. A divorce petition is pending in a family court without any progress for the past five years. When the matter came up for hearing on Wednesday, the family court judge adjourned it. Dejected over this, the woman rushed to the Tamil Nadu Mediation and Conciliation Center on the high court campus and climbed atop the multi storeyed building. She threatened to jump from the terrace.

Seeing this, people raised an alarm and the fire and rescue services personnel reached the top of the building and persuaded her from jumping. Meanwhile, the personnel spread a net near the building to protect her in the event of her committing the act. Later, the personnel rescued her and brought her to the police station.

She informed the police that she attempted to take the extreme step as there was no progress in the matrimonial dispute. She accused her estranged husband of prolonging the case intentionally. Later, the police advised her and informed the matter to her parents.
