Verify ISI mark before purchase, say experts

The BIS checks the strength of the body of the fan by having it fall from at least 12 feet height.

Hyderabad: Fans and air-cooler fan motors manufactured to ISI standards arrive in the markets after passing multiple tests.

As per the BIS Act, ceiling fans and regulators must be tested for air delivery, temperature-rise, high voltage, insulation resistance, starting (for regulator), fan speed, input, earthing connections, protection against electric shock (for regulators), moisture resistance, mechanical strength, suspension system, creepage distances and clearances, mechanical endurance and other aspects.

The BIS checks the strength of the body of the fan by having it fall from at least 12 feet height. A ceiling fan of 900 mm size must provide air delivery over 140 square metres per minute.

Similarly, a fan of 1,050mm should deliver air over 165 square metres per minute followed by 1,200 mm (215), 1,400mm (270) and 1,500mm (300).
The same specifications and tests are stated in the BIS Act for fan-motors, utilized in air-coolers.

BIS director M.V.S.D.Prasada Rao said that consumers should ask sellers about standards while purchasing air-coolers.

“The consumer has every right to verify the ISI mark on the fan-motor before purchasing it. While purchasing coolers, the consumer should focus on the water motor and body too. To prevent electric shocks, the consumer must also check the quality of the earthing facility provided by the manufacture,” he said.
