Hyderabad: Committee set up to look into Maulana Azad National Urdu University issue

The committee has to submit its report within 30 days.

Hyderabad: At the instance of the Union human resource development ministry, the chairman of the University Grants Commission has constituted a fact finding Committee to look into the allegations made against each other by the Chancellor and Vice Chancellor of Maulana Azad National Urdu University and sexual harassment cases as well.

Prof S.K. Singh, former Vice-Chancellor of the H.N. Bahuguna Garhwal University will head the committee which will have Prof. V. Vijaya Kumar, Vice Chancellor, National Law Institute University, Bhopal, as member and Dr Jitendra K. Tripathi, UGC joint secretary, as so-coordinating officer.

The committee will inquire into matters such as financial irregularities, illegal appointments, maladministration and alleged sexual harassment cases apart from the allegations made by the Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor against each other. It will also look into the complaints/representations received from the Vice Chancellor against the Chancellor regarding the interference of the latter in day to day activities of the University.

According to University sources, the committee will arrive in the third week of January and record the statements of the functionaries and inspect documents. The committee has to submit its report within 30 days.

Manuu Vice-Chancellor Dr Muhammed Aslam Parvez has complained that soon after his appointment Chancellor Firoz Bakht had started interfering in the administration of the university. When he was informed about his role, he started a media trial against the university, he claimed.

Chancellor Bakht commenting on the allegations said he had referred complaints he received to the University authorities for appropriate action, but nothing came of it. When he was restrained from entering the university, he was forced to approach other for a. He added that the National Commission for Women will conduct the hearing into sexual harassment cases on January 14. He has alleged that two students were sexually harassed by the head of the department of the Media Centre of Journalism.
