ADGP laudes GRP team for solving case

GRP officials began inquiry with local scrap dealers, and found that the boys had sold the iron slabs at a scrap shop nearby.

Chennai: The government railway police AGDP, C. Sylendra Babu, on Friday congratulated the GRP team for cracking a case involving three juveniles who were arrested on Tuesday for stealing, and placing cement slabs on the railway track, near Taramani station.

The incident happened on Tuesday, when three juveniles kept the cement slabs on the MRTS track, with the idea of breaking the slabs and selling them as scrap for money to celebrate the birthday of their friend.

GRP sources said that in the past week, they twice found slabs used for covering signal and telecommunication cables by the side of the tracks placed on the track itself, between Perungudi and Taramani stations, but the alert loco pilot stopped the train without hitting the cement blocks kept on the track.

GRP officials began inquiry with local scrap dealers, and found that the boys had sold the iron slabs at a scrap shop nearby. Initially, the boys tried to break the cement slabs manually, but when that failed, they left it on the track so that trains can run over it, breaking them in the process.

The boys are residents of Perungudi and are students of ITI in Taramani. A case has been registered under section 151 of the Railway Act (damage to or destruction of certain Railway properties).
