First green building in Andhra University

The design will avoid heat to enter the structure.

Visakhapatnam: Adding one more feather to its cap, Andhra University constructed the first green building among universities in Andhra Pradesh.

Speaking to the scribes at the newly constructed green building on Wednesday, Andhra University Vice-Chancellor Prof. G. Nageswara Rao said the new hostel for international students would help AU attract more foreign students.

“Andhra University has about 400 students from about 10 countries. The new hostel for international students was constructed with about Rs 4.4 crore, adhering to all green building norms. Besides being earthquake-resistant, this building helps in energy conservation with its spacious corridors and ventilation in the rooms.

The load-bearing walls were made of hollow-core interlocking blocks. The hollow-core was reinforced with steel bars to form the lintels of the opening. The building design will also avoid heat entering inside and is also earthquake resistant. The new hostel can accommodate about 108 students,” Prof. Nageswara Rao added.

Explaining about the construction, Vijay Nirman Company MD Vijay Kumar said the building would have very minimal maintenance and helps in energy conservation. “The hollow-core interlocking blocks were made of recycled materials. These blocks would also have the high thermal insulating properties," he said.

AU V-C Prof. Nageswara Rao informed that EDU of India and RAND of USA jointly awarded first rank to AU Engineering College among others in AP. “Various factors were taken into consideration for this.”
