No change in Thiruvambady, avers IUML

The candidates were selected after weighting all the chances and the best names were put in.

KOZHIKODE: The Indian League Muslim League has made it clear that there would not be any change in the list of candidates announced for the 20 seats, including Thiruvambady.

Thamarassery diocese and Christian organisations had opposed giving Thiruvambady to IUML, where there is sizable number of Christian population. “There is no change in our list. The candidates were selected after weighting all the chances and the best names were put in,” said IUML general secretary E.T Mohammed Basheer. He refused to react to the Thamarassery diocese’s protest.

Another IUML leader, who requested anonymity, told DC that it was unfair for Christian organizations to intervene in the issue. “Speaking in population terms, Christian community comes third in Thiruvambady constituency. IUML has the legacy of ensuring the victory of A.K Antony in Thirurangadi where there were only 228 Christians in 1995,” he pointed out.

The IUML leadership is more annoyed over the fact that resistance was not against its candidate V.M Ummer Master but the IUML itself, reflecting a communal bias. “The party’s candidature has been declared by IUML state president Panakkad Hyderali Shihab Thangal which is unchangeable by practice. This kind of venom spewing will only help the political opponents,” the IUML leader said.
