Tigers' new habitat in 'Kadapa forest'

The Gundla Bramheswara wildlife sanctuary in Nandyal division was in close proximity to Lankamalleswara.

Kurnool: A tiger was photographed in a camera installed in the Lankamalleswara wildlife sanctuary in Kadapa district, renewing calls for the creating of a tiger reserve in the forests.

Due to the availability of prey and thick vegetation, environmentalists suggest that the tiger reserve be carved out in the Kadapa and Proddutur forest divisions on the lines of the Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam tiger reserve.

The forests of Badvel, Onipe-nta and the Porumamilla range in Proddutur division, the Sid-havatam range in Kadapa division and Rudravaram range in Nandyal division along with Sri Venkateswara National Park in Tirupati could be created as a new tiger reserve, experts said.

Proddutur divisional forest officer Guru Prabhakar said big cats were frequently sighted in the tiger corridior in Onipenta and Porumamilla and were entering the Lankamalleswara wildlife sanctuary. The Gundla Bramheswara wildlife sanctuary in Nandyal division was in close proximity to Lankamalleswara and the tigers were moving between the two.

Mr Prabhakar said at least three tigers were found to be moving in the Lankamalles-wara sanctuary, and this was backed up with photographic evidence from camera traps.
