Telangana government plan for KGBVs not accepted

The KGBV scheme started in 2004 primarily to extend educational facilities to girl students.

HYDERABAD: The Telangana government proposals to expand studies in Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs) up to Intermediate level have not been agreed upon by the Central government.

The KGBV scheme started in 2004 primarily to extend educational facilities to girl students belonging to OBCs, SCs, STs, minorities and BPL families is being implemented in 27 states.

Telangana was the only state that gave a representation in this regard to Union HRD Ministry. The Centre said that KGBVs upgradation request cannot be agreed as per existing norms of the scheme.

Telangana accounts for 398 of the total 2578 schools across the country. Admissions are restricted to girl students only. The classes taught are from sixth to tenth with strength of each section not more than 40 students. Nearly 80,000 girl students are pursuing studies in KGBVs in Telangana.
