Negative points for driving licence from this month in Hyderabad

Drivers will have their licence suspended if the score adds up.

Hyderabad: The negative (penalty) system for driving licence will be implemented by mid-November.

Transport department officials and traffic police are working out modalities to enforce the system under which driving licence will be suspended for a year if the motorist accrues 12 negative points within 24 months.

The traffic police and transport department officials have asked consultants to come up with software that records the negative points of each motorist based on driving licence or Aadhaar card number, the data of which would be simultaneously available to traffic cops and transport department.

The software will be uploaded on hand-held equipment. Traffic cops said many hand-held devices are being purchased.

A case pertaining Aadhaar card being insisted by the traffic cops has come under the hammer of the High Court and is pending.

Traffic cops said they were seeking Aadhaar card details for identity purpose as some motorists do not even have driving licence.

“The court directions will be complied with when they appear. Currently, software is being prepared to take into account the driving licence, Aadhaar card and even vehicle registration numbers to help identify the motorist and the number of traffic rule violations committed by each motorist. Aadhaar card can be dropped depending upon the court decision,” said a traffic cop.

If a person, whose licence has been suspended and later revoked after completion of one-year period under Rule 45-A(4)(i), again accrues 12 points, that driving licence shall be suspended for a period of two years from the date of accrual of the said 12 points, a traffic police official said.
