Lorry hits two-wheeler on Kamarajar Salai, four hurt

Two two-wheelers were caught in the collateral damage, but the man riding it jumped off on time, escaping with minor injuries.

Chennai: In a road accident in the wee hours of Thursday, four persons were injured as a tanker lorry collided head-on with a two-wheeler on Kamarajar Salai on Marina beach. Police investigating the matter said that the lorry carrying LPG gas cylinders was moving towards Adyar from Wall Tax road at around 6 am.

When the vehicle was approaching Kamarajar road on Marina Beach, an empty tanker lorry coming from the other side tried to overtake a car in front, near the lighthouse. Unable to control the speed, the truck with the cylinders crashed into a lamp post while the tanker lorry ran over the pavement and turned over and fell. Two two-wheelers were caught in the collateral damage, but the man riding it jumped off on time, escaping with minor injuries. Around 110 gas cylinders in the lorry, fell all over the road, the police said.

Palani (36), the driver of the lorry and two men on the two-wheelers, Saran (28) and Anthony (31) were rushed to the Rajiv Gandhi Government hospital.

Ramesh, (43), another bike rider, and the driver of the empty tanker lorry Venkatesan (38) were admitted to Royapettah government hospital. The big toe on Venkatesan’s left leg had to be amputated due to injuries.

Traffic on Kamarajar Salai was affected for over an hour, the police said and another truck was brought to remove all LPG cylinders. A case of rash driving has been registered and further investigations are on.
