Coimbatore: A 40-year-old Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) bus driver attempted suicide by dousing himself with kerosene in front of the transport regional office on the Coimbatore-Mettupalayam road on Thursday, demanding revocation of his transfer order.

Velmurugan works as a government bus driver in the Valparai depot. A union member affiliated to the DMK transport trade union, he was involved in the recent strike that took place last month.

The administration recently transferred Velmurugan to the Mettupalayam depot, but Velumurugan urged cancellation of his transfer order. As the administration did not respond, he came on Thursday to the TNSTC regional office on the Coimbatore-Mettupalayam road with a plastic can filled with kerosene.

After raising slogans condemning the administration, Velmurugan doused himself with kerosene and attempted to set fire to himself. Security guards at the office entrance foiled his suicide attempt.

Velmurugan was asked to meet transport department higher officials at the regional office to discuss the issue regarding his transfer.
