Hyderabad: Post nimajjanam, roads are no longer motorable due to the damage caused by immersion processions.
Large potholes developed at several locations, dividers were damaged, and reflectors came off due to the unusually high traffic load witnessed on Tuesday. The spell of rain received on Wednesday morning added to the damage.
The main roads at Mir Alam, Rajendra Nagar, MJ Market, Jambagh, Begum Bazaar, Saheb Nagar, near the Rama-lingeshwara Swamy Temple in BN Reddy Nagar, Ashok Nagar, and Musheerabad were damaged by immersion processions.
The reflectors embedded on the road at West Marredpally were knocked off by giant trucks on their way to the Hussain Sagar. Moderate to heavy rain on Wednesday left certain roads even more damaged. Apart from this, potholes have reappeared to cause inconvenience to commuters and pedestrians.
Commuters had a tough time navigating the stretches opposite Mahaveer Hospital at Masab Tank, at Krishna Temple near Niloufer Hospital, near Ek Minar Masjid at Nampally, near BHEL, and at Balanagar.
Idol immersions also left a huge pile of garbage in the city. The Buddha Purnima Wing of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority extracted 2,000 metric tonnes of iron scrap and plaster-of-Paris at Tank Bund and NTR Marg.
Ganesh immersions at the Hussain Sagar lasted over 24 hours and left behind over 2,069 metric tonnes of garbage. This is equivalent to half the quantum of waste generated by the city on an average day.
4041 metric tonnes of animal waste was also dumped after Bakri Id celebrations in the city.
