Hyderabad: 2 killed in garbage pit as lorry skids into it

Witnesses said the truck’s tyres were very old because of which it skidded and fell into the pit.

Hyderabad: Two persons died when a lorry overloaded with garbage fell into the trash compactor at the Imlibun garbage transfer station on Tuesday.

Arifuddin, 52, and contract employee Haji Khan, 38, were dumping the put when the truck fell in. They were stuck in the cabin of the vehicle before being pulled out and rushed to a hospital where they succumbed to the injuries.

Afzalgunj inspector G. Venkatesh said said the accident occurred at about 11.30 am. “The vehicle overturned and took the two persons with it.”

Witnesses said the truck’s tyres were very old because of which it skidded and fell into the pit.

Mayor Bonthu Ram-mohan visited the spot and announced an ex-gratia of `2 lakh to the families of each of the workers.

The GHMC Vigilance and enforcement director Vishwajit Kampati inspected the spot. He said the vehicle was about 10 year old and ordered an inquiry into circumstances under which the lorry fell into the pit. He issued showcause notices to the Imlibun yard staff.

GHMC Workers Union president U. Gopal demanded compensation of `10 lakh to each of the families and compassionate appointment to for a member of each family.
