Hyderabad: While the GHMC is claiming that it reduced garbage collection points to achieve the ‘Swachh Hyderabad’ goals, local residents at Bagh Amberpet, Amberpet and Ramanthapur have converted junctions and internal roads as dumping grounds.
Earlier, there was a garbage disposal point at Red Building Junction near Rose Buds School. The GHMC closed it and painted the walls with religious symbols. However, local residents, traders and hawkers have converted the other side of the junction as the new garbage disposal point.
B Srinivas, a resident at Red Building, said that a few hawkers had started to dump the waste at other side of the junction during the night. “Initially, the quantity was less. As they continued with this practice, other locals too followed suit. Thus, this junction has become the new dumping ground,” he said.
K. Shyam Sunder, a resident from Central Excise Colony, said that an unofficial garbage disposal points are made everywhere. “Few residents are unable to come out of their houses as people dump the garbage at their gates,” he said. A. Yadaiah, a sanitary worker, said that, people from the neighbouring colonies are also behind the formation of unofficial garbage disposal points. “A few others regularly come on their bikes with garbage bags and throw them at junctions. A similar situation exists at a few colonies in Ramantapur, Bapu Nagar and Patel Nagar in Amberpet,” he said. He also said that a few residents were dumping the waste nearby their houses to save the monthly payment of Rs 50 to swachh workers.
