Hyderabad High Court takes up PIL on water

The MLA urged the court to direct the authorities concerned to preserve the water proposed to be used by beverage companies.

Hyderabad: A division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Dilip B. Bhosale and Justice P. Naveen Rao of the Hyderabad High Court on Monday issued notices to the TS government and beverage companies on a PIL moved by MLA A. Revanth Reddy.

Mr Reddy, in his PIL, urged the court to declare the TS government allocating million of litres of water to the beverage companies for manufacturing products like Coca Cola, Pepsi and beer, at the time the state is reeling under worst possible drought and “survival of mankind was at stake” as illegal, and in violation of Article 21 and 47 of the Constitution and also the National Water Policy.

The MLA urged the court to direct the authorities concerned to preserve the water proposed to be used by beverage companies and to make it available for drinking, cooking, hygiene and sanitation or other needs.

In his PIL, Mr Reddy said that the authorities have been supplying 1,512 million litres of water to the beverage companies while 14,818 villages in the state were reeling under drought.

He also said that in Hyderabad city, the present supply stood at 350 MGD per day as against the demand for 660 MGD per day, while in districts like Karimnagar and Mahbubnagar, the situation was so grim that water was supplied only once a week. While issuing notices to the respondents, the bench directed them to file counter-affidavits within three weeks.
