Thiruvananthapuram: Capital to bolster disaster control cell

Flooding is a very normal natural calamity faced by the state capital.

Thiruvananthapuram: The City Corporation is all set to strengthen its City Emergency Operation Centre to face emergencies more effectively. Sophisticated fire fighting equipment including Fireball will be procured for the first time as part of the strengthening.

"Thiruvananthapuram Corporation is one of the few local bodies in the state to have a disaster management cell. Fireballs will be used to extinguish the fire in server rooms. We will be using it as a trial run at the server rooms at the Corporation office and other zonal offices. If it's found useful we will procure more. Fireballs will come handy in narrow and congested places or in locked buildings where physical entry is extremely difficult," said the official.

District Planning Committee has approved the purchase of Rs 44 lakh worth equipment for combating various natural calamities under plan fund. Mechanical woodcutter, concrete cutter, heavy duty torch, searchlight, portable generators, water pumps, hammer, crowbars, stretchers, inflatable rubber boats, helmet, reflector jackets, GPS are some of the other equipment that will be purchased.

"Inflatable rubber boat will have a capacity to carry around 12 people at a time. Flooding is a very normal natural calamity faced by the state capital. Fifty fire extinguishers would be purchased as part of the project. Also, we are procuring Aska lights, dewatering pumps," said the official.
