The committee was under the control of Anam family for more than 8 decades.

NELLORE: The process for change in the managing committee of the 100-year-old Venkatagiri Raja's College in Nellore has been speeding up as the last date for filing nomination is Thursday, February 7, 2019.

As many as 16,129 voters, all ex-students, of the prestigious institution in coastal Andhra have to elect 7 directors among those entering the fray. The most popular college and the alma mater of several stalwarts was established in the year 1920 by the Venkatagiri Raja. The committee was under the control of Anam family for more than 8 decades.

An alumnus of VR College and noted auditor, Amamcharla Sankara Narayana had fought a long legal battle in the District Court, High Court and Supreme Court to free the college from the clutches of the old management.

Unfortunately, the 64-year-old Sankaranaraya-na succumbed to a heart attack on December 14, 2018 before realising his dream to develop the college as ‘Centre for Excellence’ and bring back the old glory.

Many former students of the institution have come forward to develop the 100-year-old college as an academic centre of excellence and bring back the past glory. Speaking to Deccan Chronicle before his demise, Sankaranaraya-na said that he wished that the college was managed by apolitical people with integrity. In a bid to fulfil the last wish of Sankaranarayana, old students of the institution led by Nellore Dolendra Prasad, Vemu-lapati Ajay kumar, Gunupati Thulasirami Reddy and many other former students, enrolled as voters, to bring consensus and elect a competent team unanimously to run the college.

According to reliable information, all the interested groups came to an understanding with regard to the directors for the new committee after hectic consultations, though the names will be known after the filing of nominations on Thursday. VR College officials said that filing of nominations was scheduled for Thursday but election date was yet to be finalised.
