Hyderabad: The Niloufer Hospital has suspended all surgeries following concern over paediatric sanitation. According to Dr. M. Ramani, the hospital undertook a fumigation or sterilisation of the operation theatre. However, delivery cases are being referred to the Government Maternity Hospital in Petla Burj, Osmania Hospital etc. Steps have been taken to accommodate patients visiting these hospitals in the next two days, she said.

Stating that there were no maternity deaths in 2016, Dr Ramani said there were no lapses on the part of doctors in relation to the recent deaths. The women who died were Nusrat, Reena, Bushra Begum, Farah Fatima and Anusha. “All the cases were of high risk. Some were anaemic and in the case of Bushra Begum, she was overweight at 90kg.”

In spite of a blood bank being functional at Niloufer Hospital, patients are asked get several units of blood from outside. A senior doctor said only one or two units of blood were provided to patients. The staff at the hospital is hand-in-glove with blood banks and they direct patients’ relatives to procure blood.
