Cop suspended for lathi ‘misuse’ near Coimbatore

The police SI under suspicion threw his lathi-stick on the bike that allegedly got stuck inside the wheel.

POLLACHI: A police sub-inspector was suspended for throwing his lathi on a speeding bike wheel resulting in three bikers being flung off and suffering injuries near Pollachi.

Sources said on Tuesday, Sardhar, 25, a resident of Sundrapuram near here along with his two friends Anwar, 18, and Afzal, 17, were heading for Aliyar dam on Monday evening. Sardhar was drivng the bike while the other two rode pillion.

While nearing Then Sengampalayam in Polalchi-Valparai road, the policeman Samantham of Kottur police station had allegedly stopped the bike as a part of his routine vehicle check, but the trio passed him without stopping the bike.

The police SI under suspicion threw his lathi-stick on the bike that allegedly got stuck inside the wheel, making Sardhar loose his control and the trio were flung off the speeding bike. They fell on the ground and suffered serious injuiries.
Other policemen at the spot rushed, rescued them and sent the youth to Pollachi government hospital. After first aid, they were transferred to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for further treatment.

After witnessing the accident, local residents and motorists staged a protest at the spot demanding action against the erring cop. Knowing the incident DSP Vivekanandan rushed to the spot and pacified the public.

The 30-minute protest came to an end after the DSP promised departmental action against the cop while the district SP Sujith Kumar in a swift action suspended the SI Samantham who now faces a departmental enquiry. The development comes as an eye-opener to cops.
