Stinking garbage points dot SCB

Open dumping is a major issue in SCB areas.

Hyderabad: Parts of Secunderabad Cantonment have started raising a stench with residents dumping garbage in blatant violation of norms and authorities not clearing them as they are on the city’s outskirts. Garbage can be seen piled up along the road in Alwal, Yapral, Bolaram and Trimulgherry areas, from where they are not cleared daily.

“Garbage lying on the roads is a persistent problem in many parts of the cantonment, especially on the sides of the Alwal road, Trimulgherry and near Indus Valley School and surrounding areas,” said Mr N. Venkata Ramana, a resident of Trimulgherry who regularly commutes to Alwal. “Sanitation workers are setting fire to piles of garbage instead of moving it to dumping yards.”

Some registered colonies like Vasavinagar, Jyotinagar and Saibaba Colony have arranged for garbage pick-up vehicles that collect garbage door-to-door and transport it directly to the dumping yards. “We have arranged our own manpower to collect garbage from our doorsteps and dump it near the Anna Nagar dumpyard in an auto rickshaw. This way there are no garbage points in the colony,” Vasavinagar welfare association president Mr T. Satish Gupta said. “We do not want pick-up points in our colony, as they emanate stink and encourage dog menace. But garbage points exist at a few places where people from nearby slums dump their garbage.”

Open dumping is a major issue in SCB areas. Trimulgherry ward member Ms P. Bhagyashree said, “We informed the cantonment board CEO, but no decision has been taken in this regard yet.”

Burning of garbage has been reported from near Bon Cheruvu near Hasmathpet. “We fall under Kukatpally municipality but face breathing problems whenever SCB workers burn garbage in nearby areas,” Manasarovar Heights vice-president Mr Subhodh Gupta said.

SCB sources, however, said the system of collecting garbage from garbage points still exists in Cantonment areas. Hundreds of contract workers and 20 lorries are allotted for this work. In GHMC areas, the garbage is directly shifted from the colonies to the dumping yard.
