Adilabad: Netas turn tribal fest into campaign field

Adivasi youth smear their faces and bodies with colours, wear a cap made of peacock feathers and carry the skin of deer.

Adilabad: The ongoing Gussadi-Dandari celebrations have come in handy for Adivasi candidates in the old Adilabad district to campaign ahead of the elections. They are taking part in the festivities, held in the Diwali season, at Adivasi gudems and seeking votes.

Adivasi youth smear their faces and bodies with colours, wear a cap made of peacock feathers and carry the skin of deer. It is a tradition for the headman with their village ‘Gussadis’ to visit other villages.

This coming together of people is providing politicians with a ready audience for their campaign messages.

Among those campaigning in the gudems was Thudum Debba (Adivasi Hakkula Porata Samiti) state president Soyam Bapurao who is aspiring for the Congress ticket.

Mr Bapurao said that he generally visits Adivasi gudems and joins the celebrations but this time it was a coincidence that the campaign fell during the festival.

Former Congress MLA Atram Sakku who is aspiring for a ticket from Asifabad was also seen at the celebrations in his constituency. Thodasam Bheem Rao of Democratic Left Front who is contesting from Khanapur and BJP candidate Satla Ashok were the others.
