Bhupalpally schools to switch over to English

The current academic year has already completed the first quarter and two summative assessments.

Hyderabad: The growing obsession with the English medium schools in rural and semi-urban areas in Jayashankar Bhupal-pally district has forced collector A. Murali and district Education officer VP Gautham to take an initiative to convert all the Telugu medium government schools in the district to English medium.

Collector A. Murali said, “Most parents conveyed that they don’t want to send their children to Telugu medium schools. I studied in a government school up to the Intermediate due to which I myself faced a lot of difficulties.”

He added, “Most of the teachers in private schools are graduates, whereas teachers in government schools have more qualifications. After considering all these factors and taking opinion from all stakeholders, I decided to convert the schools.”

The schools will have English medium courses from the next academic year as enrolment has already been done for the Telugu medium in the current academic year under Continuous Com-prehensive Evaluation System.

The current academic year has already completed the first quarter and two summative assessments.

The order issued by director of school education (DSE) on October 3 stated that before converting the schools to English medium, certain parameters, directed by the government, have to be followed.

The district education officer has instructed the authorities to assess the requirement for English medium books which have to be supplied by the government before switching over to the new medium of instruction.

The Telangana education department is also planning to provide training to teachers to switch over to the English medium.

The conversion will be undertaken in a phased manner starting with primary schools. This will also help the government to equip the teachers with necessary skills to handle the classes.
